ZUSA | Zimbabwe Universities Sports Association was formed in 1999 for the purpose of enhancing the educational experience of University Students by encouraging sports competitions of excellence amongst Universities in Zimbabwe and to provide the top student-athletes greater sporting challenges. The founding member institutions were Africa University, Bindura University of Science Education, National University of Science and Technology and University of Zimbabwe. These Universities met for the inaugaral ZUSA games in October 1999 at the University of Zimbabwe where they competed in Athletics, Men and Women Basketball, Football, Netball, Tennis, and Volleyball. The games were held from Monday to Friday as they were considered to be an important part of the educational experience. These games have been held annually ever since the inaugaural games in 1999.
During the past decade ZUSA has grown in membership from four to eight institutions and has expanded its sporting activities to include inter-university staff games.
